Kodo Members Record Music for New BoBA Short Film 
“DRUMMANz (The Unexpected Happening of Stick)”

The trailer has just been released for a new short film directed by BoBA (Yohji Tanaka) called “DRUMMANz (The Unexpected Happening of Stick),” starring Flower Companyz drummer Mr. Konishi. It also features drummers Tatsuya Nakamura and Steve Eto.

This short film is one of four made to shine a light on the local area surrounding Cinema Skhole in Nagoya.

The director approached Kodo and asked us to provide some music for the soundtrack, which we recorded at our rehearsal hall on Sado Island. Yuichiro Funabashi composed the music and performed it for the recording with Mitsuru Ishizuka and Masayuki Sakamoto.

Kodo Collaboration with Morihiro Iwata at “Russia-Japan Cultural Festival for Peace and Friendship”

On Sep. 3, 2015, Kodo’s Eiichi Saito, Maya Minowa, and Mizuki Yoneyama played the accompaniment for a ballet performance at the “Russia-Japan Cultural Festival for Peace and Friendship” in Ulan-Ude, Republic of Buryatia, Russia. Here is the video of the performance.

Our next production directed by Artistic Director Tamasaburo Bando, “Kodo One Earth Tour 2015: Chaos,” will premiere in November 2015.
This performance promises to share brand new forms of taiko music through a daring, liberating concept that incorporates drum kits and even taiko drums made from tires.

The debut tour will begin on Sado Island before visiting Fukui, Toyama, Niigata, Osaka, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Okayama, Aichi, Kanagawa, and Tokyo.

Earth Celebration 2016 will take place from Aug. 26 (Fri) through 28 (Sun). EC will be directly followed by local festival Ogi Minato Matsuri on Aug. 29–30. Next year, while there will not be any Shiroyama Concerts, the festival will focus on letting everyone enjoy the various wonders of Ogi and Sado Island together. Details will be announced in May 2016. See you all next summer on Sado Island!

TV Program “Journeys in Japan” Featuring Kodo Apprentice Centre Available On Demand

“Journeys in Japan” is an English-language TV program that features foreign reporters traveling through Japan, showing the nation through their eyes. The latest episode is a journey to Sado Island and features demon drumming (onidaiko) as well as a visit to the Kodo Apprentice Centre. The report includes the apprentices playing taiko and a look at their lifestyle at the Centre and on Sado. This program was broadcast in 130 countries and is currently available for viewing worldwide online for a limited time.

Contemporary dancer Alessandra Lupi visits Sado Island to study the powerful Onidaiko demon dance. The traditional performing art is offered to the gods to pray for peace and abundant harvests. She stays in a charming inn converted from an old home, tries rice farming and meets apprentices of Kodo, the renowned drumming ensemble. During her journey, she comes to feel how closely the Onidaiko performing art is connected to the local way of life. On the last day of her journey, Alessandra is bestowed with an honor that is most unexpected…

Yesterday we were delighted to welcome a full house for the finale of our six consecutive performances of “DADAN 2015” at Asakusa Public Hall in Tokyo. Thank you very much to everyone who visited Asakusa to see us!

Tomorrow we resume our nationwide tour of “Kodo One Earth Tour 2015: Eternity” in Sagamihara, Kanagawa. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
